The Online or Email Cover Letter

The Online or Email Cover Letter

In general you will want to maintain the same standards for an online or email cover letter as you would for a printed version. The email to which you attach your resume can be your cover letter, or you can write a separate cover letter as an attachment.

  • If you are sending a resume online, send a cover letter as well!
  • Note in your cover letter how you emailed your resume. For example, if you sent your resume as an attachment, you could write, "My resume is attached for your review and consideration." If you sent your resume as a separate email, note that as well.
  • Be specific in the subject line of your email correspondence. An employer may not even look at the email if you have not titled it.
  • Have a professional email address. Your UT address is appropriate as long as you don't use a silly or cute address.
  • Be formal and professional; do not allow the casual nature of most emails to influence how you write your cover letter.

Just as you would with a printed cover letter

  • Tailor the letter to fit the job.
  • Use correct industry terminology.
  • Keep it short (3 paragraphs), highlighting your key skills and competencies.
  • Be sure to include your contact information.
  • Spell check and proofread thoroughly before sending.
